All my teaching in Grade 4 has been in English, meaning the students have been involved in a total 'immersion' program. Their English has improved significantly and they are now more confident and willing to 'have a go'. Hopefully, even just this short time will give them a confidence boost when speaking English.
Everyday, students in the Philippines spend an hour learning English as well as their national language. Although students and families in this school do not routinely speak in English it is becoming increasingly critical for them as members of a global society. Filipinos often apologise for their English and resist using it. I so wish I could speak a second language as competently as they do! I tip my hat to the Filipinos for their English and encourage them to practise this wonderful skill.
